Why dramaturgy?
Dramaturgy is something in the theatre world that allows for deeper immersion in the stories being told. It helps create a cohesive vision between creatives, and it forces us to engage with the material we’re working with. We may ask, “Why are we reviving Death of a Salesman for the hundredth time? What do we gain from doing this play now? What are we doing to it to make it uniquely our vision?”
A lot of these ideas around dramaturgy can be easily translated to TTRPGs, and I believe create a better gaming experience for all of us. Whether it’s game design, producing for APs, your own home game, dramaturgy is a tool that can help you tell the story you want.
So, if you’re the weird intersection of theatre-kid-turned-TTRPG-creator, this might be the newsletter for you! I know you’re out there. I see you.
In each newsletter, we’ll explore different theatre theories, how to apply them to our games, review various TTRPG shows, talk about different game systems, and of course, I will be recommending plays and musical soundtracks I’m reading/listening to.
Get comfy! Get your favorite drink ready! And get ready to cast some dramaturgy on your TTRPG experience!
